I get mad at these people not because I give a shit about prostitution or BDSM (don’t partake in either one), but because they aren’t helping the cause of feminism or even the women in question.

They’re actually hurting these women, and it pisses me off to see it.

My first hard drive held 30MB. Like most folks at the time, I never thought I’d need anything larger — after all, it held all my floppies and then some. It cost $500. My first six or seven years of using a computer, no one could afford a hard drive, so this explosion of storage space was quite a revelation.

Now, I can buy about 20TB of storage for the same price — 70,000 times (yes, that figure is correct) more capacity for the same money, inflation adjusted.

That is something.

And yet a former friend of mine insisted that Goldman was “brilliant” because they are the biggest bully in the schoolyard. Yeah, makes sense to me.

The cost of a three-line ad in a newspaper before Craigslist? $40 or $50.

The cost of a much better ad that reaches more people using Craigslist? Free.

I’m actually surprised that the newspaper industry hasn’t attacked CL harder.

No matter what you think of the morality of prostitution or even of Craigslist itself, to understand why most things occur in American society, you merely need to observe who is losing money and who stands to gain from a certain action. That usually gets you 90% of the way to the answer.

Risotto is considered by anyone to be adventurous? WTF? I consider fried grubs to be adventurous. But risotto? What in the hell?

I guess that sort of food is adventurous for many people, of my grandmother’s generation and the one right after that. Those generations grew up in an America where anything that wasn’t steak and potatoes was considered exotic, and perhaps dangerous.

Glad I didn’t grow up in that world.

It sounds like crap. I don’t understand that brand of hipster nonsense. Vinyl has about 1/2 or less the dynamic range of CDs — and many other disadvantages.

She hits on an important set of reasons this is occurring that many ignore.

Corporate structures and conservative political forces that support them are seething with hatred towards the last place in America where people don’t have to slave 60 hours a week, 50 weeks a year without job security, guaranteed leave, etc.: the academia. They will not rest until they destroy us because while we exist, we will serve as a reminder to everybody else that some freedom from corporate slavery is possible. Everybody but the academics have accepted as normal and unavoidable things like at-will firing, no job security, all kinds of discrimination and abuse from their employers, no meaningful benefits, and the necessity to give up your opinions, your voice, your dignity, and your leisure just to eke out a very modest living.

I do think the mere existence of places where free thought is allowed really does piss off the corporate types. These places are, after all, an implicit threat to the way they wish to force us to live our lives. By its very existence, it must be destroyed.

And it is being destroyed. Within a generation, academia as we know it (and as it is worth anything to society) will probably be gone.
