I was just talking with my girlfriend about how Craigslist actually helped many women get away from abusive pimps…by being able to post ads for free and schedule their own clients.

Of course, this opens up some more risks, but nothing like that of having to find all your clients through a typically-abusive, controlling pimp who takes half or more of your money.

I don’t think prostitution is perfect. I don’t think working at Burger King is perfect, either, or working at Wal-Mart. And yet we allow those things, and don’t allow people to do with their bodies what they wish to do.

Ideally, prostitution would be legal, regulated and a prostitute would be treated no differently by society than a bank teller. (Never get there I know, because people are terrified of sex, but in my ideal world….)

People like Suzie have enormous problems disentangling their moral objections to things from logic and reason. In fact, they can’t do it at all. But watching them squirm in their self-contradiction and hypocrisy is amusing, if nothing else.

I was going to write about this silly post by Suzie but you got there first. :-) This whole “Feminists Against Craigslist” campaign is mind-boggling to me. It’s also annoying to see people defend freedom of speech but only the kind of speech they approve. How is that different from the religious right that beileves in the freedom of religion but only if it’s their religion?

It's really telling that no AGs have gone after large, entrenched media organizations who run far more explicit ads for hookers, like Village Voice Media. Here's the one for my area. Took me about 10 seconds to find it with the power of Google. Surely the state AGs could've done the same. (Strangely, my adblock blocked the text of the ads and not the photos, so I was a bit confused at first about why all the ads were nothing but photos.)

I especially loved it when Dr. Phil (whose show I consider to be one of the best comedy shows ever) said that prostitution came into existence because of Craigslist. I mean, I know he’s “just an ol’ country boy”, but that’s too much even for him.

I wonder why it’s so hard to convince my fellow academics of these things, while people outside of academia realize it a lot faster and easier. Is it some sort of willful blindness when people don’t want to acknowledge things that scare them?
